HISTORY OF BARANGAY LUYANG
HISTORICAL ACCOUNT
Luyang is coined from the word ‘hupas’ ‘undang’ or ‘lurang’ . It came out about after a chinese merchant ship took refuge in the cost of the barangay due to typhoon. Unfortunately, most of the ships crew got sick. Medicines ran short prompting could relieve them of the illness. Luckily, the steward met a folk, along the way and the former told the latter of this predicament. Concerned with the situation, the folk, who happened to be a “hirbolaryo” offered an herbal medicine and instructed the ship man to prepare a concoction out of the herb, which until now remain unknown. The herb mysteriously cured the ill and the sick aboard the ship. The traumatic situation faded away as the typhoon left. The merchants then called the place “Luyang” upon knowing the Visayan Word subside, as a result of the herbal medicine the barrio folk gave them which relieved them of the trauma and cured the sick.
GEOGRAPHY
Barangay Luyang has a total land area of 179.2393 hectares and is located four kilometers away from Larena and six kilometers away from Siquijor. It is bounded by Barangay Sabang in the North, Barangay Cang-agong in Southeast, Barangay Banban in the South and Seashore in the Northwest. The Barangay Politically subdivided into seven districts, Namely: Baybay, Nangka, Escolta, Tuba, Doldol, Tapon and Crossing Baybay.
DEMOGRAPHY
Luyang has a population of 902 people more or less 446 are males and 456 are females 278 families and 209 households. With regards to the religious aspects most of the people are catholic in faith but there are also devoted to Iglesia ni Kristo, Four Square and Jehova’s Witness.
SOCIO-ECONOMIC
The main livelihood of the people of Luyang is Agriculture-farming, fishing. The main crops cultivated included corn,cassava,coconut and banana. Marginal fisherman and farmers also engage in small-scale industry. Conciousness of Environmental Preservation, the people of Luyang grow ornamental plants on the shoulders of the roads and on some vacant areas.
Luyang has a growing number of business and Commercial Establishments. . Janze Hallow Blocks offer low price and high quality hallow blocks on most barangay’s within the province. North Western Gas Station . There are Five Bakeshop, which supplies the quality bread. There are five furniture makers. Luyang has also Banban Elementary School that answer to the educational needs of the Children. There are also 19 Sari-Sari Stores that satisfies the basic needs of the inhabitants.
